Roofing: Roof Guttering
Roof Repair or Replace
Regular repair and maintenance of the guttering and down pipes on your home can help to lengthen their life and ultimately save you money. You can do much of the work yourself, but it will be quicker and easier to call in a professional and a lot less hassle. It will also save you from having to scale the dizzy heights of your roofline – not high on many people’s lists of things they like to do!
Taking time to look after the guttering and down pipes can double or even triple the life of your roof drainage system. That equates to major savings on repair costs and more money in your pocket to spend on other, more enjoyable and worthwhile, things for yourself and your family.
You should inspect your guttering and down pipes around twice each year – once in the spring and again in the autumn when leaves and other autumn debris can cause guttering problems. Clogged guttering and downspouts can be a big problem and cleaning is necessary. Clogging usually occurs at the elbow where the down pipe joins to the gutter. This elbow is relatively easy to remove and it is a good idea, every now and again, to remove it and inspect for clogging. Leaf guards can be used to stop any unnecessary gutter clogging by leaves.
Most old houses have cast iron gutters and down pipes, although most modern dwellings have PVC ones fitted.
